Reports

Secretary’s Minutes -- The minutes from the meeting held on December 2, 2008, were reviewed and approved as written.

Council Representative – Linda attended the Council meeting on December 11, 2008.

Budget Manager – No report was available.

Youth Group – Jenny reported that youth have started selling pizzas that will be made on January 24, 2009, and will be available on Sunday, January 25, 2009.  The profit from the pizza sale will be used for a mission trip.

Jenny indicated that she is organizing a junior youth (middle school) group mission trip to work at Merom.  If they work for at least 3 hours, they get to spend the night for free.  She is also trying to put together a youth group (high school) mission trip in the summer.  She is polling the youth to find out their summer schedules.

This Sunday will be the first Recycling Sunday.  Two youth will be available at the paper recycle bin in the parking lot to help unload newspapers for recycling.  This Sunday will be the first Bingo Sunday sponsored by the youth.  Bingo will take place from 2 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with snacks and prizes available.  Cheryl will get the supplies for the popcorn machine.

The youth group will meet on January 18, 2009.  The junior youth group may meet on January 25, 2009.  A lock-in for the youth (4th grade through high school) will be held on January 23, 2009.  The youth will be assembling the pizzas at 8:00 a.m. on January 24, 2009.

Sub-Committees

Sunday school – No activities to report.

Nursery – Currently Robin has been available in the nursery for the first service.  The attendance varies from zero to five depending on the week.  Jenny reported that no interest in a paid caregiver has been received from the advertisements.  She will continue searching and advertising.

Children’s Church – Jenny will develop a schedule for volunteers for children’s church.  She will continue to conduct children’s church at least 2 Sundays a month.  The new pastor, Ross Tyler, may want to reconfigure children’s church and children’s church.

Old Business

Advent program and dinner – Approximately 170 people attended the evening.  Marcia ordered 450 chicken tenders and 200 rolls from Hampton’s Market.  Plenty of chicken and rolls were left.  She also purchased a total of 3 side dishes (macaroni and cheese) and 3 desserts (cobbler) from Gordon Food Service to supplement the dinner pitch-in items.  Suggestions for next year include:

Put chicken in the front of the dinner line.

Make more wassail.  Three gallons were not enough.

Clarify the times for each of the events -- wassail, dinner, and program.

            Purchase more hot dishes.

Make double batches of tea and lemonade.

Use 36 cup coffee maker and label as decaffeinated.

Use variety format for program, but keep length to approximately 1 hour.

Use director to help the acts switch more smoothly.

Breakfast with Santa – The Breakfast with Santa was attended by approximately 10 children.  The adults appreciated the breakfast of breakfast casseroles, sausage links, and French toast sticks.  Potential ideas for next year would be to have a birthday party for Jesus instead.

A suggestion was made to have a breakfast during Fellowship hour about 1 month prior to the Easter Egg hunt, Vacation Bible School, the beginning of Sunday School, and Christmas to recruit volunteers to help BCE with each event.

Christmas Eve Service – Approximately 90 attended the service at 5:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve.  The format of youth conducting the reading, Sounds of Praise providing the music, and having communion were appreciated by the attendees.

New Business

Linda thanked those BCE members whose term end and provided the list of new BCE members.  The new BCE members will be Jennifer Coon, Joan Hearrell, Lori Houston, Art Miner, and Susie Vehling.  Jennifer, Karen, and Cheryl will continue to serve the remainders of their 2 year terms.  Both Marcia and Linda will remain involved as well.
